After Care

Looking After Your Hair Extensions:

Unseen hair’s Top Tips

Your aftercare is a vital role in the longevity of your hair extensions, which is why it is so important to understand how to look after your hair extensions correctly.

This section you will find all the key elements for the correct aftercare to keep your hair extensions at its best quality for as long as possible. Our premium hair lifespan range is up to 12months.

Separate Your Hair Extension Bonds Daily

Separating your hair extensions is one of the most important parts of aftercare. We advise separating bonds with your fingers, preferably in the morning. Separating your bonds may seem like a long task, however this will only take a matter of minutes. By doing this it will help prevent any tangling at the root. If you do not ensure all bonds are separated it may lead to tangled hair extensions, which may also cause damage to your natural hair.

Wash Your Hair Extensions Correctly

  1. After your hair extensions are applied, wait 2-3 days before washing your hair,

This is especially true for tape-in and bonded hair extensions. Waiting 2-3 days will give the glue some time to set and stick well to your natural hair, extending your extension’s longevity.

  1. Don’t shampoo every day.

Washing your hair too frequently will cause your hair extensions to dry up and can even damage your natural hair.

So, shampoo your hair only every other day or every two days to keep it clean.

If you are using clip-in extensions, we suggest washing them after 15-20 wears.

  1. Detangle your hair first.

Before stepping under the shower, detangle your hair by using a brush or your fingers. If you have coarse hair, you can also add a little oil, to make detangling easier.

This will ensure the even distribution of your shampoo and conditioner when you wash.

  1. Do not wash with hot water.

A hot shower can be soothing to your body, but it can be very damaging to your hair.

Instead, wash with warm water to clean your hair effectively. Then, you can use cold water as a last rinse to seal your hair cuticles.

  1. Rinse properly.

After shampooing or applying conditioner, rinse your hair extensions until the water runs clear. This way, you can prevent product buildup. You should avoid using conditioner at the roots to ensure your bonds do not loosen or slip.

  1. Drying your hair extensions.

Always avoid towel drying. Wrapping your hair, or worse, rubbing it with a towel can lead to frizz. This is because of friction.

Instead of using a towel, gently squeeze out excess water with your hands. Then, use a cool hair dryer to dry out your extensions. Whenever using any heated styling tool on hair extensions or your own hair, always use a heat protection spray, oil or hair serum.  Using these products will make your hair extensions last as long as possible by preventing the adverse effect of heat.

What Shampoo Is Good for Hair Extensions?

Wash your hair extensions with sulfate-free shampoo and rinse well with lukewarm water. This way, you’ll maintain the quality of your hair pieces.

What happens if you wash hair extensions with sulfate?

Sulfate will dry out your hair extensions. Because the hair pieces aren’t directly attached to your scalp, they don’t get sebum or natural oils.

Brushing your hair extensions

When brushing your hair, you will need to take your time and brush gently. You will need to use a hair extension brush to ensure no bonds are caught whilst brushing, You will need to start brushing your hair from the ends working your way to mid length then roots. If a hair extension brush is not used this may be uncomfortable and you may get your brush caught in the bonds.

Never Sleep With Your Hair Extensions Wet

Wet hair can promote tangling and matting, therefore it is very important that you never sleep with your hair wet or damp. It is very tempting to fall into bed with semi-dry hair, but your hair extensions will be very difficult to brush in the morning if you do choose to do this, putting pressure on the bonds and the cuticles of the hair. When washing your hair, you must always ensure you have enough time to dry them fully before getting into bed.

Secure Your Hair Extensions Before Sleep

To make your hair easy to brush in the morning, securing your hair extensions before you sleep is essential. This will make styling your hair the following day much easier, stopping you from having to detangle your hair which can put pressure on the hair extension bonds. If you share a bed, this will also stop the hair extensions from becoming trapped or pulled during the night. Most common way to secure your hair extensions before sleep is to put them in a loose plait.

Attend Regular Hair Extension Maintenance Appointments

Always keep up to date with your maintenance appointments. Maintenance appointments can differ from person to person and depending on what method you have had installed. We do advise you to speak to your hair extension technician for advice on how long you need between each maintenance. We also recommend you book your first maintenance when you have had extensions installed. Maintenance appointments can be between 4-8 weeks depending on your hair growth and the type you have had installed. If you need any more information around time frames for maintenance appointments, please contact us at Enquires@unseenhair.co.uk

Wearing Hair Extensions On Holiday

If you plan to take a trip whilst wearing your hair extensions, you will need to be very wary of the water you expose your hair extensions to. Too much chlorine in a pool can cause your hair extensions to feel brittle, and the minerals in sea and shower water can in a worst-case scenario cause discoloration, therefore limit the exposure to these elements as much as possible.

Use Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatments On Your Hair Extensions

As well as your recommended shampoo and conditioner, you should also be applying a regular intensive treatment to your hair extensions. Hair extensions receive no natural oils from the scalp to help keep them soft and healthy, therefore it is your job to supply this moisture to your hair. The best way to achieve this is with oil-based products, particularly if they are natural products.

It is recommended that hair extensions are treated with intensive treatments at least once a week to help keep them in their best possible condition.

Looking After Your Hair Extensions Is A Full Time Job

Looking after your hair extensions is a very important process, and by following these basic steps your hair extensions should stay in the best condition possible throughout the time you are wearing them. Always ask your hair extension technician to provide you with aftercare advice after your hair extension fitting, and make sure that they are happy for you to contact them if you have any additional questions.
